PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
The Master of Education degree program in Teaching and Curriculum offered through Penn State Harrisburg provides a course of study designed to enhance the skills of K-12 teachers in York County. Through this program teachers will be able to:
>> learn the latest research, theory, and practice
>> integrate current theory and research into practice
>> prepare to meet new PDE regulations
>> pursue professional development goals
>> address district's staff development and strategic planning goals
>> learn to manage change effectively
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
The Teaching and Curriculum program includes 36 credits:
CORE COURSES (15 Credits)
* Learning Theory (EDUC 520) 3
* Curriculum Development (EDUC 506) 3
* Education Assessment: Theory and Practice (EDUC 539) 3
* Education Foundations (EDUC 505) 3
* Educational Research Designs (EDUC 586) 3
* Students elect 1 credit implementation experience with any three of the (*) core courses
EDUCATION ELECTIVE COURSES (9 Credits)
Students select three out of seven courses in such areas as Instructional Skills, Curriculum Development, Special Needs Students, Classroom Climate, and Technology.
OTHER SUPPORTING ELECTIVE COURSE (3 Credits)
Students select one three-credit course from an approved list in such areas as a liberal arts, humanities, or a content area.
IMPLEMENTATION EXPERIENCE COURSES (6 - 1 Credit)
Implementation experience courses are designed to offer guidance and support as students begin to use strategies in their own classrooms. Students will select three of the four core courses and follow them up by three implementation experience courses. Also, students will follow-up their Education Elective Courses with three implementation experiences.
These 1-credit implementation courses will meet for twelve and a half contact hours and will include required assignments that connect theory to practice.
EDUCATION SEMINAR COURSE (EDUC 591) (3 Credits)
This course is commonly called the capstone course and will serve as the culminating experience for the program.
Special Note: All program requirements must be completed within a seven-year period. A minimum grade-point average of 3.0 is required for graduation.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR MASTER OF EDUCATION AT PENN STATE YORK:
An applicant must present a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a junior-senior grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. Exceptions may be made for students with special backgrounds, abilities, and interest.
Applicants with GPAs below 3.0, but at least 2.5, are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test, which is administered by the Educational Testing Service, and must achieve a combined score of at least 850 for the verbal and quantitative subtests. For dates, locations, and other information about the test, call the Student Assistance Center at Penn State Harrisburg at 717-948-6025, or write to the Educational Testing Service, Graduate Record Examination, Princeton, NJ 08540.
It is advisable to pursue degree status as early as possible. No more than 10 credits taken as a nondegree student can be applied toward degree requirements.
Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit acceptable scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A score of at least 550 is required. The scores must be submitted before the application will be considered.
Application Deadline: Candidates may enter the program at the beginning of summer session, fall or spring semester. To allow time for processing of applications, all required information must be received by March 1 for the summer session, by July 1 for the fall semester and by November 1 for the spring semester. NONDEGREE GRADUATE STUDENT STATUS
Any student who has a baccalaureate degree but has not been admitted to the Penn State Graduate School must apply for admission as a nondegree graduate student in order for graduate transcripts to be issued. Application is only required one time. No fees or transcripts are required. Your registration cannot be processed if you have never completed this form. Call 717-771-4060 to receive the nondegree application form. TRANSFER CREDITS
A maximum of 10 graduate credits earned as a nondegree student at Penn State or at any accredited institution may be accepted for a student's Teaching and Curriculum program. Course work to be considered for transfer must be less than five years old at the time of application to the program. Special Note: With adviser approval, transfer credits can be applied toward the education and supporting electives, core courses and on a case by case basis. All transfer credit requests must be approved by the program.
