The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is an association of, by, and for people who wish to continue to study and learn. OLLI is dedicated to the proposition that learning is a lifelong process and curiosity never retires.
The basic concept of the program is that of peer learning and teaching. Members participate fully in study groups through preparation for and involvement in discussions of a wide variety of subjects. OLLI in York is affiliated with Penn State York but not run by Penn State. The University gives support in resources and experience. There are no tests and no grades; members participate purely for the joy of learning. The goal is a high quality learning experience accessible to all. OLLI at Penn State York is envisioned to become a center for intellectual and social activity which welcomes older adults into the life of the college.
In addition to study groups, lecture series and other learning opportunities are included in the program. Membership in OLLI provides an opportunity for social interaction, new friendships, and collegiality.
The OLLI program is planned and operated by volunteer members and managed by a Board of Directors with the support of a small staff and modest budget. As an egalitarian democratic membership organization, OLLI depends on the volunteer services of its members. Members are strongly encouraged to become actively involved as study group leaders and with other programs and administrative activities necessary to the success of the institution.
